Meditation Relieves Chronic Inflammation

Psychological stress plays an important role in many chronic conditions like inflammatory diseases. One of the therapeutic techniques believed to combat stress and inflammation is meditation, but there has been little evidence to support this theory, specifically on mindfulness meditation. Mindfulness meditation consists of focusing one’s attention on breathing, bodily sensations and mental content while meditating, walking or doing yoga. It was originally designed to help patients with chronic pain to manage stress. A study conducted by University of Wisconsin-Madison neuroscientists with the Center for Investigating Healthy Minds at the Waisman Center found that patients who suffer from chronic inflammatory […]

Omega-3 from New Dairy Products

The American Heart Association recommends that adults must eat at least two servings of fatty fish per week to obtain omega-3 fatty acids, which are known to decrease the risk of heart disease, reduce triglyceride levels, slow the formation of atherosclerotic plaque, and lower blood pressure. Research has also suggested that omega-3 fatty acids are helpful in reducing inflammation, promoting infant brain development, and supporting brain function.  However, not many people are able to include fish in their regular diets, and one of the reasons may be the taste and smell, which may not be agreeable to many people. Food […]

Diet Supplements that Reduce Inflammation

Chronic inflammation is a factor known to contribute to the development of chronic diseases such as cancer, rheumatoid arthritis, and heart disease. Many dietary supplements are believed to reduce inflammatory processes and reduce one’s risk for disease, but evidence supporting these claims is limited. A new study at the Division of Public Health Sciences, Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center, Seattle, Washington reveals that regular intake of fish oil supplements, chondroitin and glucosamine, which are available as over-the-counter dietary supplements, reduces inflammation, suggesting that they may help prevent chronic diseases. Elizabeth D. Kantor, a PhD candidate at the research center, and […]

Mung Bean Extract Helps Fight Against Sepsis

Sepsis is a serious and potentially fatal condition characterized by widespread inflammation in response to infection of the blood, bone, bowel, or other major organ of the body. About 750,000 Americans are affected by sepsis annually and as many as 28-50% of these patients die. In 2010, an international symposium hosted by Feinstein Institute, dedicated to sepsis, was held, attracting researchers and leaders from many countries to agree that sepsis must be treated immediately as a medical emergency, and that aggressive measures should be done to prevent and identify it. Mung bean extract has been found by researchers at the […]

Scientist have succeeded in producing “beneficial bacteria” which can produce a human protein called Elafin, that can fight against gut inflammation. The protein is artificially introduced into food-grade bacteria known as Lactococcus lactis and Lactobacillus casei, which are found in dairy products. When taken orally by mice, the Elafin-producing bacteria are found a few hours later in their guts where they deliver the anti-inflammatory protein. When taken by mice with acute or chronic intestinal inflammation, the oral treatment decreased inflammatory symptoms and provided significant protection in the gut. Elafin was also found to protect cultured human intestinal cells from inflammation […]
