A recent clinical investigation shows that premenopausal women who are otherwise healthy but have larger waistlines have lower bone quality and less bone formation than those who had less abdominal fat.  Although previous studies have shown that obesity may protect against osteoporosis (a condition characterized by weak bones), recent studies have challenged this belief.  Other scientists have found that central obesity is inversely associated with bone mineral density (BMD). Adi Cohen, MD, of Columbia University in New York City, and colleagues believe that since obesity is a growing public health problem, it is necessary to study the effects of truncal […]

Too Much Tea Can Damage Bones

A 47-year old woman consulted her doctor for bone pains, which she felt in her arms, lower back, hips, and legs for the past five years. She also reported that all her teeth had been extracted due to brittleness. Initial evaluation showed that she had very high fluoride blood levels and unusually dense bones on X-ray. She was referred to the section head of bone and mineral metabolism and director of the bone and mineral research laboratory at Henry Ford Health System in Detroit, Dr. Sudhaker Rao, who obtained a bone biopsy. Rao, the author of the published case study, […]

Dairy Products and Bone Health

Researchers have found that there are only selected dairy products such as milk and yogurt that may be associated with higher bone mineral density (BMD) but only in the hip area (exclusive of the spine). Cream and other forms, such as ice cream may be associated with lower BMD because of their low nutrient level and high fat and sugar content. The findings by lead author Shivani Sahni, Ph.D., were published in the journal Archives of Osteoporosis. The research, completed by more than 3,000 participants from Framingham Offspring study, involved a food frequency questionnaire about dairy product consumption which was […]

Recent investigation on the effects of chronic lack of sleep on bone health reveals that sleep deprivation may increase one’s risk for osteoporosis and altered bone marrow activity. Carol Everson, Ph.D., professor of neurology, cell biology, neurobiology and anatomy, and her colleagues at the Medical College of Wisconsin report that they have observed abnormalities in bone metabolism and bone marrow activity in mice experiencing prolonged sleep deprivation. The results of the study revealed that chronic lack of sleep in laboratory mice lead to an imbalance in bone formation processes, which in humans can translate to the beginning of osteoporosis, a […]

Quit Drinking, Protect Your Bones

Alcoholism does not only damage the liver, it can also reduce bone mineral density. Too much alcohol consumption can disrupt the bone renewal process and inhibit bone remodeling, leading to osteoporosis, or weak bones. This condition increases one’s risk for fractures. Austrian researchers report, however, in the journal Alcoholism: Clinical & Experimental Research, that there is hope for alcoholics who already have weak bones. They found that if alcohol-addicted men quit drinking, they may regain their bone mass within a few weeks. The investigators analyzed the bone-density tests of 53 alcoholic men who had undergone rehabilitation for 8 weeks. The […]
