Yoga for the Heart

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a common heart problem that affects more than 2 million Americans. This condition involves an abnormality in heart rhythm, which is brought about by the irregular contraction of the heart’s upper chamber. Although it may be asymptomatic, it can increase one’s risk for stroke. Atrial fibrillation is often treated with drugs like beta-blockers and anticoagulants to help control heart rate and prevent thromboembolism, which can lead to stroke, but some patients do not respond well to these. Researchers led by Dr. Dhanunjaya Lakkireddy from the University of Kansas Medical Center have found that taking regular yoga […]

Meditation Relieves Chronic Inflammation

Psychological stress plays an important role in many chronic conditions like inflammatory diseases. One of the therapeutic techniques believed to combat stress and inflammation is meditation, but there has been little evidence to support this theory, specifically on mindfulness meditation. Because of these, the patients report that they have an improved quality of life as a result of joining the exercise programs. Mindful Eating to Reduce Weight and Blood Sugar

Ohio State University researchers found that diabetes type 2 patients who practice mindful eating could lower their blood sugar levels and reduce their weight just as effectively as those who follow traditional nutrition-based guidelines. Eating mindfully involves responding appropriately to physical cues regarding hunger and fullness and consciously choosing to eat healthy foods. The researchers compared the effectiveness of the two types of behavioral interventions in 52 participants who were randomly assigned to either treatment group – a traditional diabetes self-management program or a mindful eating program. The volunteers were aged 35-65 years old, diagnosed to have type 2 diabetes […]
